Everything you need to know about Botswana

Our local experts share their knowledge to prepare your trip.

When to Visit Botswana?

The best time to visit Botswana stretches from May to October, during the dry season. This is when wildlife concentrates around the waterholes of the Okavango Delta, Moremi, and Chobe: sightings are spectacular, especially in September and October, despite temperatures rising sharply during the day. June and July nights, however, can be freezing in a mokoro at dawn. The green season, from November to March, transforms the Kalahari: stormy skies, newborns in herds, migratory birds, and more affordable rates. An excellent compromise for photographers and travelers curious to discover a less crowded Botswana, provided you're willing to accept a few muddy trails.

What budget should you plan for a trip to Botswana?

Botswana has made a deliberate choice: low-volume, high-value tourism. This is reflected in travel budgets, which are generally higher than in neighbouring southern Africa. Expect an average of 350 to 600 € per day per person for a circuit combining lodges on private concessions, light aircraft flights between camps, and guided safaris in the Delta or Linyanti. More accessible options are available around 200 to 250 € per day, combining mobile camps, state-run lodges in Chobe, and self-drive stages. Add to this international flights, guide gratuities, and a possible extension to Victoria Falls, often combined with a stay here.

Why organize your trip with a local agency in Botswana?

Botswana is difficult to plan from abroad. The most interesting camps fill up quickly, internal Cessna flights are allocated by quota, and getting the right sequence between Okavango, Savuti, Linyanti and Makgadikgadi sometimes comes down to a matter of days. Working with an English-speaking local agency based on the ground changes everything: we know the guides, the concessionaires, the real quality of the lodges beyond the brochures, and we adjust the itinerary based on the delta water levels or wildlife movements. It's also the assurance of having a contact you can reach during your trip—someone who speaks your language and that of the trackers you'll be heading out into the bush with.

What to see on a Botswana trip?

A beautiful itinerary in Botswana often begins with the Okavango Delta, its waterways navigated by mokoro and islands where you walk alongside a tracker. Next, head to Moremi Reserve, renowned for its leopards, then towards Savuti and Linyanti, hunting grounds for lions and wild dog packs. In the north, Chobe National Park lines up its hundreds of elephants along the river, to be observed from a boat at sunset. To slow down, head to the Makgadikgadi Pans, vast salt flats where baobabs sleep, or central Kalahari and its black-maned lions. A few days at Victoria Falls ideally extend the journey.
