Saguni Safari Lodge
Saguni Safari Lodge
Safari lodge on a wooded island in the Okavango Delta, overlooking Mbudi Lagoon in the Khwai area, renowned for its exceptional wildlife density.
The Saguni Safari Lodge sits on a wooded island in the Okavango Delta, bordering Mbudi Lagoon, within the Moremi East concession. Its name comes from the Bushman language: "Saguni" designates the Khwai region, loosely translated as "a zone of abundant wildlife and spectacular views". The lodge lives up to its promise, in an area renowned for its density of predators.
Why choose Saguni Safari Lodge
Khwai is one of the most coveted areas of the delta: the river attracts elephants, buffalo, hippopotamuses and their retinue of predators during the dry season. Positioned on a riverine island, the camp benefits from a permanent vantage point over the lagoon, where wildlife comes to drink. It's an excellent choice for those seeking a complete safari experience, combining vehicle game drives, walks and canoe excursions, without changing camps.
- Location in Moremi East, overlooking Mbudi Lagoon
- Bushman etymology of the name "Saguni" linked to Khwai's wildlife richness
- Variety of activities: open vehicle, walking, mokoro, cultural outings
- Emblematic wildlife: lions, cheetahs, leopards, African wild dogs, elephants
Atmosphere
The camp is organised in two zones: a lodge core facing the lagoon, and a more secluded area nestled within the riparian forest canopy. The spirit remains that of a classic bush camp — canvas, wood, understated furnishings — without pretension. The sounds of the delta (hippopotamus calls, lion vocalisations at night) are part of the experience.
Accommodation
Saguni comprises 8 safari tents on the lagoon side and 9 tents set within the forest, offering two distinct atmospheres depending on whether you prefer water views or forest immersion. The tents are spacious, furnished in a classic style designed for comfort after long game drives. This dual configuration allows the lodge to accommodate various traveller preferences without overcrowding the central area.
Activities and services
The activity programme leverages the camp's privileged position within the concession:
- Photographic safaris in open 4x4 vehicles, morning and late afternoon
- Walking safaris guided by an armed guide, for a slower, more intimate approach to the bush
- Night safaris, available from the adjacent private concession, to be confirmed at booking
- Mokoro excursions, in traditional poled dugout canoes, through the delta waterways
- Cultural visits to neighbouring villages, to understand the relationship between local communities and wildlife
The observable wildlife covers the major game species of southern Africa: lions, cheetahs, leopards, African wild dogs, elephants, buffalo, hippopotamuses and giraffes are among the species regularly sighted in the area.
Location
The lodge is situated in the Khwai area, at the northern edge of Moremi Reserve, in the Okavango Delta. Access is by light aircraft from Maun to the concession's airstrip, followed by 4x4 transfer. Plan for half a day of logistics between arrival in Botswana and settling into camp.
Nearby
Khwai is often combined with other areas in northern Botswana. To structure an itinerary:
- Camp Kadizora, further west in the delta, to vary aquatic landscapes
- Ghoha Hills Lodge, in Chobe, for exceptional elephant concentrations
- Muchenje Safari Lodge, on the western edge of Chobe, overlooking the river
- Dinaka Camp, in the Central Kalahari Reserve, for landscape contrast
